When considering if your dog would benefit from canine rehab, consider the following:

Is your dog struggling to get up and down?

Has your dog suffered an injury?

Has your dog undergone surgery?

Does your dog need to shed a few pounds?

Is your dog slowing down due to arthritis?

Has your dog had a librela shot?

TPLO surgery; bilateral TPLO; Canine Rehab, Pawsitive Steps Canine Rehab
We have a 115 lb male, Anatolian/Pyrenees mix, Oscar. He underwent double TPLO surgery (ACL).  Oscar's personality is not really open to meeting strangers and he has very large teeth and paws. Oscar's demeanor didn't phase Josie at all. She got right to work evaluating him and his needs for rehab. We, of course, took precautions but over all Josie was a trooper. She discovered something wrong with his ankles on the first visit (don't know the technical term) that was limiting his mobility and affecting his recovery. It had probably been there before his surgery. She is currently working with him to alleviate this issue.
She explained his range of motion exercises and showed me several rehab techniques to further his mobility. She explained things in an informative manner but not overly technical.
What most impressed me about Josie is her dedication to the animals she serves. They can't tell us when they are hurting or where they are sore but Josie can help them communicate by evaluating their muscles and joints and focusing on the problem area. She also makes herself available through email or text if I have a question or just need reassurance that I haven't broken my dog.🙄😁
I highly recommend Josie if you find yourself in need of a canine PT. She knows her stuff.

Frequently Asked Questions

We know there are always questions!

We want to be able to provide you with the best knowledge and support to help you make informed decisions.

What is Canine Physical Therapy? Canine physical therapy is human physical therapy applied to animals.

Does Pet insurance cover rehab? Yes! You will have to check with your specific insurance to make sure it is covered. Some insurance providers require services to be done by a vet or under vet supervision. Those animals will need to be seen at Waterloo Animal Hospital, if you want to submit to insurance.

Why is clinic the preferred option? While we like to provide the mobile option, it limits our ability to see other dogs. By coming to clinic, we are able to see more dogs, have more equipment options available, able to do more modalities, and have extra hands if needed. Oklahoma veterinary practice acts limits some treatments and modalities to be performed under direct vet supervision. Since I am not a vet, I cannot do them without the vet being in the building.

Can anyone provide Canine PT? No. In order for someone to provide canine PT, they must undergo some sort of certification or specialty training. Look for individuals who are Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT) or Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioners (CCRP). These individuals have completed additional training in rehab specifically for animals.

What is the driving radius for mobile option? We do not have a specific driving radius. We have seen dogs in Enid, Stillwater, Shawnee, Newcastle, Norman as well as the OKC metro. Schedule and availability may limit options. Additional fees will be added for more than 35 mi from Waterloo Animal Hospital.

Do we have to do more visits after eval? No. We want to empower you to be able to help your pet get better. We never force you to buy more visits. However, the best outcomes are those who are seen for at least 4 additional visits as well as family doing the home exercise program. For this reason, we have created a package of evaluation + 4 visits at a discounted price.

Does this clinic have an Underwater Treadmill? No, we do not have an underwater treadmill. While underwater treadmill may be beneficial to some, it is only one tool in the toolbox. We do have a body weight support treadmill training system. Be sure and read about it in the Pet Owners Sections.

Why should we see you as PT instead of someone who is a Vet? My background is what makes me different. In my experience, veterinarians are great with pain management and modalities and tend to steer their practices that direction. My background as a PT is a much more hands on approach. The techniques used in rehab are the same as humans, just a different body and species. Dogs tend to like and I am not afraid of dogs who growl or snap at me. While I am not a DVM, I do work closely with them and have a clinic at Waterloo Animal Hospital.

What is the frequency of follow up visits? There are a lot of factors that go into that. How well is your pup moving around? Are they in significant pain? Are you physically able to do the home exercise program with them? Do they need extra hands or modalities not available at home? Do you have pet insurance? Are you able to afford continued therapy? Some dogs we see a few times a week, while others are weekly, once a month or once a quarter. Some we do evaluation only. We give you the recommendations, but ultimately, it is what is feasible for the owners.

The Pawsitive Steps Difference

We listen to YOU. We spend time learning about your pup’s unique issues and needs, your concerns, and your goals to get your pup as healthy as possible. We know that you are the expert on your pup.

Fear free approach. Pawsitive Steps is dedicated not only to your pet’s physical well being, but their mental well being as well. We place a priority on building trust with all our patients by not forcing them into situations outside of their comfort zone in order to foster an environment where our patients are excited and eager to participate.

Education. We place a heavy emphasis on educating our pet parents to empower them with life-long strategies to help improve their pet’s quality of life.

No “cookie-cutter” approach. Your pup’s recovery plan will be created specifically for them! No two dogs are the same, so why should their plan of care be the same?

Home Exercise Program. We choose appropriate exercises for you to perform at home to continue with carryover from the PT session. We have an app available to download that has both pictures and videos to help ensure you are performing the exercises correctly.

Clinic and Mobile Option. We understand it can be difficult to load a dog up and bring into clinic, especially if they have a serious injury. We have limited mobile option for a higher fee.

Open Communication. We want to do whatever we can to help you and your pup during the rehab process. We encourage communication and follow-up.

We offer wheelchair and Help 'em Up Harness Rentals. We understand that purchasing equipment can be very expensive. We all hope that conditions can be temporary and not permanent and we do not want to cost of equipment to deter you from helping your dog to continue living their best life. We offer monthly rentals of each item for $25.
